The Sanskrit word kapal means ‘cranium’ or ‘forehead’ and bhati means ‘light’ or ‘splendour’ and also ‘perception’ or ‘knowledge’. It brings clarity, cleanses frontal region of the brain. Kapalbhati Pranayama is forceful exhalation of breath with inhalations being passive. We recommend you to start with Kapalbhati only when you have mastered Abdominal Breathing otherwise there are chances that you might make mistake during the practice.

  1. Sit with you head neck and back straight in a cross legged position with your eyes closed
  2. Ensure that your spine is straight during the practice of Kapalbhati Pranayama
  3. Inhale and fill up your lungs by bulging abdomen out
  4. Start with forceful quicker exhalation, remember that your inhalation is passive and automatic
    1. Ensure that your abdomen expands with inhalation and contracts with exhalation
  5. Stop the practice after 20/30 strokes if you are practicing for the first time


  1. People with Hypertension should not do it or do it under the guidance of a competent teacher
  2. If you have ulcers, those suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, vertigo (in case it is due to ear infection and otherwise endure that you don’t strain your neck), epilepsy, stroke, hernia or gastric ulcer, please ask your doctor before starting practicing this.
  3. It is not recommended during pregnancy or if you are undergoing menstrual cycle.


  1. Kapalbhati Pranayama has a cleansing lungs, respiratory system. It balances vata, pitta and kapha and also strengthens the nervous system.
  2. As the name suggests it helps in cleasing frontal lobes of the brain
    1. The frontal lobes of our brain are involved in various functions, such as motor function, problem solving, language skills, judgement, reaction to stimuli, and memory, social behaviors.
  3. It is said to reduce abdominal fat and tones the digestive organs. It purifies the nadis, and removes sensory distractions.
  4. Though kapalbhati is described as cleansing technique in Hatha Yoga, it reduces the carbon dioxide (CO2) percentage in blood. Acutally, rapid Kapalabhati Pranayama is known to maintain acid–base balance. Deep inhalation makes the dead space of the lungs active, thus improving oxygenation of tissues and cleanses the body as a whole
  5. Helps to combat metabolic syndrome (MS) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
