Introduction

Single Nostril Breath is also known as Surya/ Chandra Bhedana Pranayama in the Sanskrit language. Single Nostril Breath of Surya/ Chandra Bhedana Pranayama is divided into words Surya, which means sun, bhedana, which means piercing and Chandra, which means moon. Avoid the Surya bhedana asana if you have high blood pressure or any kind of heart disease. Don’t try both the breaths on the same day.  Always practice yoga with pre-medical advice. It must be practiced under the kind guidance of yoga guru.

Steps of doing Single Nostril Breath of Surya/ Chandra Bhedana Pranayama

  • Our right nostril is energetically associated with our body heating energy, symbolized by the sun and our left nostril with our body cooling energy which is symbolized by the moon.
  • The goal of this pose or yoga is to integrate the sun and moon meas body heat energy and cool energy for happiness and health. The purpose of the two breaths then is to create balance by warming a cool body mind and vice versa.
  • Start the pose by sitting in a comfortable zone and make Mrigi Mudra. For doing Single Nostril Breath or Surya bhedana asana block your left nostril and inhale through your right nostril.
  • Then close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril.
  • Continue the same steps for 1 to 3 minutes, inhale and exhale.
  • Then for doing the Single Nostril Breath or Chandra bhedana, block your right nostril and inhale through your left nostril.
  • Then close the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril.
  • Continue the same steps for 1 to 3 minutes, inhale and exhale.

Benefits of Single Nostril Breath of Surya/ Chandra Bhedana Pranayama

  • Traditionally, Surya bhedana is said to stimulate the brain and increase body heat.
  • Chandra bhedana is not usually listed among formal pranayamas in traditional texts, but it is reasonable to assume that its effects are opposite that of Surya bhedana, it also quiets the brain and cools the body temperature.
