How to practice Krounchasana and its benefits?

Yoga is to build inner strength, peace of mind, awareness, and harmony both in mind and body. It is a very ancient therapy to control physical, mental, and spiritual practices that originated in one’s body. Yoga builds our muscles and keeps us ready to face the challenges of life through out the day. We never feel tired or sleepy if we opted to do yoga regularly. A magical strength builds up in our body, which helps us face even the natural environment changes like we never feel extreme cold or heat in winter or summer seasons, respectively, if we are in the habit of doing yoga daily. It’s experienced practically by our ancient guru who did Tapasya for long many years on the Himalayas’ top. What’s that? That is the power of yoga. Many medical treatments are based on yogasanas in ancient as well as the modern age.

Today, we will discuss Krounchasana, which is ultimately a unique deviation of a forward bend that requires the leg to be brought towards the face. The name “Krounchasana” is derived from the Sanskrit word Krouncha, which means “heron” and asana means “pose.” In the 19th century, Sritattvanidhi used the name for a different pose, squatting, supported by a rope with the teeth. Its modern posture was described in the 20th century. Swami yogesvarananda names the modern pose as “ ekapadotthitahastapadaprasaranasana” in his first steps to higher yoga in 1970.

How to practice Krounchasana?

While starting any asana, always remember to do it with full faith and the right yoga guru, i.e., guidance. To begin with, Krounchasana begins in dandasana i.e., staff pose. One knee is folded so that the heels rest by the hip touch as done in virasana (hero pose). Next, with both the knees together, the left leg is shifted towards the torso and straightened it as much as possible. The same will be repeated on the other side. Krounchasana is also referred to as heron pose in the English language. Let us discuss the steps in detail:

  1. Sit in dandasana pose by bringing left leg into Ardha Virasana.
  2. Then bend your right knee and place your foot on the floor by setting your right arm against and inside of the right leg.
  3. Cross your hand in front of the right ankle and hold the right foot outer part.
  4. Then hold the inner part of your right foot with your left hand.
  5. Inhale and stretch the leg diagonally to the floor, make an angle of 45 degrees. Keep the foot slightly higher than your head.
  6. Hold this position for half a minute or say 30 seconds. Exhale and relax the left leg. Repeat the same steps with the opposite leg and hand.
