A healthy heart means a healthy body, and a healthy body is a core foundation of holistic wellness. Without proper heart function, our organs would not be able to receive the life-sustaining blood full of oxygen and nutrients, which they require to function effectively. Unfortunately, many chronic lifestyle problems today target the circulatory system in particular, such as through hypertension or coronary heart disease amongst others. Sedentary lifestyle, smoking, drinking, pollution, and stress are just some of the very many factors that impact our heart’s health in a negative manner.

It is often believed that due to its relatively gentle nature, yoga is not a good exercise to get your heart rate up and pumping. However, nothing can be farther from the truth – indeed, yoga training provides some of the most holistic benefits to improve heart health, which includes –

  • Firstly, yoga is known to help control chronic circulatory problems such as high blood pressure and high blood sugar, both of which can cause damage to the heart in the long run. Regular yoga training can thus help improve these markers and keep your heart and body healthier.
  • Yoga has also been known to help weight loss through a multi-dimensional approach. Given that obesity is significantly linked to increased risk of heart problems, reducing weight is one of the major ways on can boost their heart health.
  • Stress takes a toll on the entire body, and the heart is no exception. With yoga training, not only do you get to engage in mind relaxation, but this positive relaxation also helps in cutting down negative coping mechanisms such as smoking, thus giving a further boost to your heart health.
  • For those who already have existing cardiac conditions, yoga can be a great way to exercise – it is gentle, modifiable, and cultivates mindfulness and good breathing, which are often central to recovery.

Hence, yoga can be of tremendous benefit in boosting heart health.

Yoga Poses to Try

When opening up your heart and boosting its health and performance are on the agenda, the following yoga poses can be of great help. So incorporate them into your regular yoga training, and you will certainly feel the impact –

  • Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) – This asana helps in opening up the heart and lungs. Additionally, it also strengthens the spine, tones the hips, and helps in relieving stress and fatigue. Hold the pose for up to thirty seconds, and try to breathe normally and evenly.
  • Utkatasana (Chair Pose) – Though you may feel the pose in your hips and legs, this pose will also help open up your shoulders and chest, and stimulate the major organs of your body, including the abdomen, diaphragm, and heart. Try holding the pose for up to a minute, and if you want an extra challenge, squeeze a block between your thighs.
  • Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)  – A moderate challenge to flexibility and concentration, this pose helps in stretching the entire front portion of the body, from the throat and chest to the thighs and ankles, gives the back an inversion stretch and improves posture, and also stimulates the organs of the neck and abdomen. Hold the pose for up to thirty seconds.
  • Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) – A great way to open up the hips and hip flexors, this pose is known to stimulate the heart and improve circulation, and is especially beneficial for high blood pressure, symptoms of menopause, asthma, and reducing fatigue. You can stay in this pose for up to five minutes, and use rolled up blankets to support your thighs if you are feeling stiff.
  • Dandasana (Staff Pose) – A great pose to help you improve posture, this is one of the easily doable yoga poses that also strengthens back muscles, stretches the shoulders and the chest, and allows the heart area to feel more open. Hold the pose for anytime longer than a minute to help you feel its impact.
  • Uttana Shishosana (Extended Puppy Pose) – Known to help stretch the spine and shoulders, this pose can help in opening up and stimulating the entire upper body region, leaving you feeling calm, energized, and open.
