5 yoga poses which kids should know!

Yoga is not just a form of exercise, but a way of life. It’s proven to be beneficial in several ways, whether it’s your physical health, mental well-being, or spiritual awakening. Yoga is also something that can be suited to any kind of individual, no matter how old or young, fit or unhealthy.

If you’re someone who has experienced the benefits of a good yoga routine, you may want to introduce it to the kids in your life as well. You can start out small, and introduce them to these fun and essential poses which kids should know.. They may soon take a liking to the feeling that yoga brings them, and will explore more areas of the discipline as they get older.

Cat-Cow Pose

Start in the Tabletop position, with the hands directly below the shoulders and knees in line with hips. Gently exhale and arch the back towards the ceiling to get into the cat pose. Come back to the tabletop position while inhaling slowly. For the cow pose, drop the back towards the floor while inhaling, and then exhale while returning to the tabletop position. This is a great warmup for the spine, and easy enough to introduce kids to.

Bridge Pose

This classic back stretch is a good place to start out when you want to introduce your kids to yoga. Most kids will love the challenge provided, and it is a great pose for stretching out the spine, opening up the shoulders and thighs, and strengthening the hamstrings. If your kid is having trouble getting their hips off the ground, place a sturdy bolster or pillow under their lower back to help out. Make sure they don’t experience any shoulder or neck pain. It’s a good idea to get expert help to correct posture if they do.

Tree Pose

This one is great for building their balance, and is quite fun for kids to try out as well. Stand on one leg and place the sole of the other against the inner thigh. This can also help them practice balancing on either leg by switching over when tired. If they’re having trouble balancing, leaning against a wall can help greatly. It also stregthens core, which is important for good posture.

Child’s Pose

Quite aptly named, this posoe involves sitting back on the heels, and then gently bringing the forehead down in front of the knees. Let the hands lay on their sides, or stretched out in front, whichever is comfortable. This is great for relaxing and lengthening the spine, which is important for growing kids. This is a very gentle pose, so it will help your child calm their mind as well.

Cobra Pose

For this pose, lie down on your stomach with your hands beside your shoulders. The palms should be placed on the ground, and then slowly push up your upper body using your palms. Let your kids know that it’s important to engage the abdominal muscles, as it protects your lower back. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds, and increase the duration when comfortable. This pose is also great for stretching the back and engaging the core, and releases a lot of fatigue.
